There are two types of dentures: complete and partial.  Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing or require extraction. Partial dentures are often used when some natural teeth remain and gaps require filling.  A partial denture not only plays the role of enhancing the smile by filling gaps, it also prevents natural teeth from shifting into gaps left behind after tooth loss. Dentures are durable appliances intended to last many years, but they may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear over time.

Today, dentures may offer patients a solution to any number of dental issues, including:

• Loss of all teeth (upper, lower, or both) – complete denture
• Loss of several teeth – partial denture or dental implants
• Enhancing smile and/or restoring facial structure – complete or partial denture
• Improving chewing, digestion, and speech– complete or partial denture

Getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of one to two weeks.  Digital impressions are created and measurements are taken and used to build your custom denture.  Several fittings may be necessary to achieve the perfect fit, tooth shape and color. At your final appointment, the dentist will make any final adjustments and offer comprehensive care and cleaning instructions for your new appliance. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, practicing good oral hygiene at home and booking regular dental visits will aid in extending the life of your new dentures and protect your oral health.

For most patients, it is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some tenderness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty while adjusting to new dentures. Also, some patients report experiencing sore cheek muscles from all the smiling they do with their beautiful new dentures!
